“Le Vie dei Tesori” is a big event that every year allows tourists and locals to visit dozens of locations, buildings and museums usually closed to the public. The event usually takes place in Palermo, but this year’s edition involves 4 more cities in Sicily.
Five cities, Palermo Siracusa, Messina, Agrigento and Caltanissetta, are to be (re)discovered between underground tours and trips to inaccessible places. Palermo becomes a large museum for five weekends between the end of September and October with more than 100 site visits, UNESCO Nights, to visit the city’s sites with a unique atmosphere a festival dedicated to children and a calendar of meetings, concerts, shows…
If you are looking for accommodation in Autumn keep in mind that temperatures are still around 26°-30° Celsius, so don’t rule out one of our villas in Sicily with pool or near the beach for a Sicilian getaway in October or in early November; when the weather will get even hotter during Indian summer weeks.
The other cities join in for 2 weekends only: from 15 to 17 and 22 to 24 September. In Syracuse, in particular, after 20 years, you will have the chance to admire the rooms and cells of the former Carcere Borbonico of Ortigia, a historic prison built in the nineteenth century. You can also join the tours to the Cappella Sveva, the heart of Archdiocese Palace in Piazza Duomo, the park of Villa Landolina with rare plants and flowers between sarcophagi and ancient anchors, the suggestive church of San Martino, and the roofless church of San Giovanni in the Jewish district of Giudecca of Ortigia.
In Messina, the “treasure hunt” involves monk crypts and romantic gardens including the one loved by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The city that the Greeks called Zancle, the “falcon” on the Strait, survived invasions, conquests, and rebellions; it was loved by Antonello da Messina and was Caravaggio’s refuge.
Tours in Agrigento and Caltanissetta offer an opportunity to admire hidden views and far more locations than just the famous Valley of the Temples.
Le Vie dei Tesori is quickly becoming one of the most important cultural events in Italy. Last year’s edition counted 215 thousand visits in 15 days, just slightly under the visits to the Colosseum in the same frame of time.
