The area of Marsala is one of those we love the most. You can surely tell by our selection of holiday villas in Sicily that we have a special feeling for the town and its surroundings. Probably because there you can breath a unique atmosphere, unlike anywhere else.

There’s history. Marsala is one of the oldest towns of the island. Its foundation dates back to the Phoenician times, the 4th century BC. And there’s beauty. Nature made a great work, making the coast of Marsala one of the most beautiful stretches of land of Sicily.

Right on the coast there are a couple of spectacular views that no traveller can miss.

The first one is obviously Mothia, one of the 4 isles part of the Stagnone nature reserve. We talked about how Marsala was originally a Phoenician town, on the isle of Mothia you will find the legacy that Phoenicians left: the ruins of an ancient fortress that can be visited once corssed the sea (even on foot during low tide).

The second view are the saltpans and the windmills. Apart from the natural beauty of the landscape, there you might find, if you are lucky enough, the flock of pink flamingoes that live in the area, and usually feed and rest on the low waters beyond the tubs where salt is harvested.

For the third view you must get into the town, to its very heart. There you are: it is the old town of Marsala, a unique mixture of architectural styles, the result of a very complex history. Just walking across the streets will be like taking a walk in an en plein air museum.
