Palermo has always been known for its history and art. Its old town is an unbelievable mixture of architectural masterpieces, legacy of the several populations that lived in the city and in Sicily over the centuries. In this cauldron Palermo’s culture grew and changed to create the unique mosaic it is today. Right now Palermo is one of the places to be, this is why you can find several estates in our Sicily villas selection that are located in this area.
Every new “thing” here is another piece adding to the multicultural and faceted soul of the city, which absorbs and reinvents every input it gets from the outside.
Today we want to help you discover 3 new things that changed the face of Palermo over the last years:
1. Street-art. Far from being considered a vandalic act, painting the walls of the city has become a tool of education and redemption for many “though” boroughs of the city. Thanks to artists from all over the world thewalls of Borgo Vecchio, of the Magione area and more are now a museum en-plein air. You can find more information and a lot of pictures on Street Art Palermo official Facebook Page.
2. Local food. Palermo is the capital of the street food. Some of the delicacies you can taste while taking a walk across the alleys fo the old town have become legendary. But if you visit the city now you will immediately notice how many restaurants and trattorias devoted to organic local food you will find. Fresh ingredients coming from local farmers and fishermen and a strong will to reinvent the traditional Sicilian way of cooking. This is the new must.
3. Music. The local scene has never been so brilliant as in the last couple of years. Palermo and its surroundings have become the capital of Sicilian songwriters and musicists. There are quite a few places where you can listen to live music. “I Candelai” in the old town is probably the one with the most packed schedule.
